Resources for Traveling Patients

At the Da Silva Center, we know that traveling for medical care can feel overwhelming. Our goal is to help you focus on your child or loved one by handling the nonmedical details.

Our Traveling Patient Services team can help make your journey as smooth and stress-free as possible.

Team members can assist with:

Housing accommodations

We’re committed to helping families access safe, comfortable, and affordable accommodations throughout their visit to the Da Silva Center.

Whether you need accommodations for a single night or an extended stay, Pittsburgh has a range of options, including:

  • Ronald McDonald House Pittsburgh — Connected to UPMC Children’s by an enclosed pedestrian bridge, this eight-floor building has 74 private apartments with equipped kitchens, TVs, and internet access for up to four guests. There are also laundry facilities.
  • Family House — Provides comfortable and affordable accommodations. All rooms include a private bath and access to on-site laundry facilities. They also have communal kitchens, dining areas, and fitness facilities.

Translation support

No matter what language you speak, we want to ensure your family feels informed, understood, and supported. Throughout your care journey, our professional interpreters can help make communication between your family, your doctors, and care teams easier.

We can:

  • Assist with understanding diagnoses, treatment plans, and follow-up care.
  • Offer in-person and remote interpretation during appointments and procedures.
  • Support scheduling, registration, and billing, and answer insurance-related questions.
  • Talk with your referring doctor to ensure continuity of care.
  • Translate medical forms, questionnaires, and essential documents.

We have many services and amenities to help make your stay more comfortable and convenient.

Amenity kits

Personal hygiene kits are free for families with a loved one getting care at the Da Silva Center. Each kit includes essentials, such as shaving cream, a razor, mouthwash, and deodorant. It also comes with lotion, shampoo, soap, toothpaste, and a toothbrush.

Laundry

Laundry facilities are available to inpatient families. Detergent and other supplies are available on-site for 25 cents.

Restaurants

Children’s Hospital features these dining options:

  • Cafeteria — Grab-and-go salads and sandwiches, home-cooked entrees, pizza, grill offerings, sushi, and more.
  • Koala Cafe — Healthy bowls, snacks, sandwiches, milkshakes, smoothies, and more.
  • Starbucks — Freshly brewed coffee and a wide range of beverages, sandwiches, salads, snacks, and more.

Gift shop

Our gift shop offers a large variety of items, including gifts, clothing, and snacks. It also has toiletries, phone cards, postage stamps, and bus passes.
