After some brain or sleep tests, sticky electrode adhesive often remains in your hair. This glue helps keep the sensors, called electrodes, in place so the test can collect accurate information.
Although the adhesive might feel uncomfortable, you can safely remove it at home. A little patience and care will make your hair clean and back to normal.
What Is Electrode Adhesive (EEG Glue)?
Electrode adhesive is a paste, gel, or glue that holds electrodes in place. Doctors use it during tests like electroencephalograms (EEGs), sleep studies, and other neurological exams that record brain activity. It keeps the sensors steady on your scalp throughout the test.
After your test, the technician will use a special cleaner to try to remove most of the glue. But it’s common for some to get stuck in your hair.

Why Are EEG Glue and Other Adhesives So Sticky?
EEG glue and other adhesives need to hold the electrodes in place even as you move, sweat, and sleep. Some tests go on for many hours or days, sometimes even when you are at home. That means the glue must remain strong enough to hold everything in place the whole time.
That’s why it often takes more than water and regular shampoo. But don’t worry, it’s not permanent. It’ll come out.
What Do I Need to Remove Electrode Adhesive?
You don’t need anything fancy. Try what you have first at home first. Use safe products for your skin if you have sensitive skin or allergies.
You may need to try multiple methods to see what works best for your hair. Different products also work better with different types of glue or adhesive.
Most people already have a few of these products at home.
- Acetone, which you should use carefully and sparingly. It can dry out or damage your hair or scalp.
- Clarifying shampoos, meant to clean your scalp and hair deeply.
- Comb (a fine-toothed comb may work best).
- Gentle dish soap like Dawn.
- Hair conditioner.
- Hair-safe adhesive remover.
- Oils that are safe for your skin, like baby or coconut oil.
- Shampoo.
- Towel.
If you use acetone, test it on a small area of your skin first. It can make your skin dry or irritated, especially on the scalp. Oils are gentler and a good place to start, especially for kids.
How Do I Remove EEG Glue?
If you’re asking, “What is the safest way to remove EEG glue from hair?” follow these steps:
- Add conditioner or oil — Rub it onto the glue and areas where it’s sticking.
- Let it sit — Oils and conditioners should sit for about 10 to 30 minutes. If you’re using acetone, apply it only to the glue areas and let it sit for a few minutes at a time. While you wait, you can wrap your hair in a shower cap or towel.
- Comb it out — Use a comb (fine-tooth combs may work best) and gently comb the glue or adhesive out of your hair. Separate the hair into small sections and tackle them one at a time. Start at the ends of your hair and move toward your scalp. Take your time. If the glue is in a hard-to-reach place or has really gotten stuck, ask someone else to help comb it out for you.
- Wash and rinse — When you’ve combed all the sections, wash your hair and rinse everything. Make sure you don’t get any products, especially the glues and oils, in your eyes when rinsing your hair. Run your fingers through your hair as you wash and rinse it to loosen and free any remaining glue. Use warm water and avoid making it too hot because this can further aggravate your scalp and damage your hair.
You may have to repeat the process a few times. If you do, don’t skip to using harsh chemicals. First, repeat using oil and conditioners a few times.
What about different hair types?
The glue may come out more easily if your hair is fine or straight. This may take longer if you have thick, coarse, or curly hair.
Use plenty of oil and work in small sections. Go slowly, especially if you’re untangling knots. If you’re worried about breakage or drying out your hair, follow up with a moisturizing conditioner or deep treatment after you’ve gotten all of the glue out.
How long will this take?
Some people can get the glue out on the first try. Others may need to try a few different products or do several rounds of washing and combing. It might take a few days before your hair feels back to normal.
Don’t worry; this is normal, especially for certain hair types and strong adhesives. Be patient and gentle.
How Can Parents Remove Kids’ EEG Glue?
It’s tough for kids to sit still, especially when someone’s combing through their hair. Here are a few ways to make it easier:
- Don’t pull or tug hard.
- Give them a snack or small toy to hold.
- Let your child watch a favorite movie or show.
- Stay calm and take breaks if needed.
- Work in small sections, taking a few strands at a time.
When Should I Call a Doctor About Stuck EEG Glue?
Most of the time, you can get the glue out at home. But if it’s really stuck or your scalp feels sore, it’s OK to ask for help.
Call your care team and let them know. If you don’t know what kind of adhesive they used, call the EEG or sleep lab and ask. They may have specific tips or product suggestions.
You can also ask a hairdresser for help. Some stylists have experience removing medical adhesives and EEG glue, and some use special products or conditioners that can help remove adhesives.
How Do I Keep EEG Glue from Getting Stuck in My Hair?
Unfortunately, there’s no way to prevent glue from getting stuck in your hair.
Removing EEG glue from your hair can feel frustrating, but it doesn’t have to do damage. With the right approach, your scalp and strands will recover smoothly.
