Chad Kosanovich, MD, is a cardiologist. He’s a heart expert focusing on cardiac imaging at the UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute. We sat down with Dr. Kosanovich to learn more about his career. Read on to find out what he finds most rewarding about being a cardiologist.

Why did you decide to become a doctor?

There is no greater joy than the ability to help others. That joy, combined with my love for science, a medical career was a perfect fit. My initial experiences in the medical field showed me that working as a physician would let me care for so many and feel joy every day.

What led you to focus on cardiology and cardiac imaging?

From the early days of my training, cardiology had my full attention. I always found myself excited to learn more about the heart. Each day in cardiology began to feel less like work and more like wearing a badge of pride.

I quickly found that advanced cardiac imaging was my true passion. It combines many of my interests, including using new and novel technology to diagnose and treat cardiac diseases.

What is the most rewarding part of your job?

Working as a cardiologist is a daily reminder that I am truly lucky to have found something that fills me with enthusiasm. The ability to interact with and help so many people is by far the most rewarding part of my job.

Additionally, I’ve loved seeing UPMC’s dedication to expanding advanced cardiac imaging. Having this technology expand throughout the health system has been wonderful to see firsthand. There are few greater feelings than finding the optimal testing to diagnose a patient and then creating their recovery plan.

Why did you choose to work at UPMC?

As I looked for potential areas for training, I always hoped to return home to Pittsburgh to start my career. In 2017, I was very honored to match at UPMC for my internal medicine residency.

Here I met so many people dedicated to helping others. I realized there was no other location in which I would have rather trained. Three years later, I matched in the UPMC Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship. I followed this with additional training in advanced cardiac imaging.

Over my seven years of training, the UPMC team became like a second family. I wanted to continue to grow within this supportive and dedicated atmosphere. UPMC’s dedication to investing in advanced cardiac imaging has allowed me to provide the best care to members of my hometown.

What services will you be providing at UPMC?

At the UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute, I will provide non-invasive cardiology care and standard cardiac imaging services. I will also perform and interpret cardiac MRI and coronary CT across the UPMC system.
