And more than half of all elective surgeries no longer happen in hospitals.At the UPMC South Surgery Center, UPMC surgeons perform about 3,200 elective surgeries and other procedures each year using state-of-the-art equipment and the newest surgical techniques.According to Shiv Goel, MD, medical director of the UPMC South Surgery Center, outpatient surgery offers many advantages over traditional inpatient surgery without compromising quality of care.\u201cWith outpatient surgery, you return home the same day as your procedure,” says Dr. Goel. \u201cPatients receive care in a safe and comfortable setting provided by a medical team focused on their care.”The surgery center offers South Hills area residents convenient access to a full range of surgical, medical, and diagnostic procedures. The surgery center’s surgeons and anesthesiologists also practice in UPMC hospitals in Pittsburgh and surrounding areas, notes Dr. Goel.Dr. Goel is an anesthesiologist at the surgery center as well as the center’s medical director.
